1 Thessalonians 1:3c-4

In 1 Thessalonians 1:3c is the third of things that the Apostle Paul prays for continually for those at the church in Thessalonica: “patience of hope” (1 Thessalonians 1:3c, NKJV). What, we may ask, is “patience of hope?” It is not simply “patience of hope” as hope must have a subject to hope in, and that is the focus of our hope. As 1 Thessalonians 1:3c-4 continues, we learn that it is our “patience of hope in our Lord Jesus Christ in the sight of our God and Father, knowing, beloved brethren, your election by God.” Paul is praying for the Thessalonians continued hope in the Lord Jesus Christ that He will indeed fulfill His promise of eternal life for all who will put their faith in Him. The Bible teaches us in John 1:12-13, “But as many a received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name: who were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.”

This is a promise and example to put your hope in our Lord Jesus Christ.

Our “patience of hope” as the Apostle Paul prays for the Thessalonians in 1 Thessalonians 1:3c-4 is a direct reflection of our faith in Jesus Christ our Savior – the Savior of the world! We may put our hope in many things as we struggle through this evil world, but to put your hope in Jesus is to receive His guidance through His Holy Spirit working in your life as a temporary fulfillment of His promise to return one day to take us to our eternal home in heaven. It is our faith made reality in an uncertain world. Put your trust, hope, and faith in Jesus today, and He will guide you too through His Holy Spirit as He works in our life.

Dear LORD,

There are uncertainties in this earthly world in which we put our hope in Jesus today to guide us through them. Save us, change us, and make us an example of Jesus working through our lives for others to see and join in a hope that leads to eternal life and salvation in Jesus Christ. In Jesus name I pray, amen.
