Revelation 1:1-3

In Revelation 1:1 we learn that this revelation is the revelation of Jesus Christ, which means that this is to make us knowledgeable of our risen Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, and of the “things which must shortly take place” (Revelation 1:1a). But there is more that we must not miss in this opening statement: “The Revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave Him to show His servants” (Revelation 1:1a). God gave this revelation to Jesus so that He could share these things to come with His servants. This will be very difficult to grasp if you are not a servant of God through salvation in Jesus Christ.

We also learn that this Revelation of Jesus Christ was recorded/written by the Apostle John.

In Revelation 1:3 (NKJV) we learn something that is not declared in any other book of the Bible; “3Blessed is he who reads and those who hear the words of this prophecy, and keep those things which are written in it; for the time is near.”

This is the Revelation of Jesus Christ as given/recorded by the Apostle John through the guidance of an angel (Revelation 1:1).

This is the Revelation of Jesus Christ, the Savior of the world. We have read and studied about His earthly ministry, we will now read and study about His place in glory at the right hand of God. We will learn about His guidance for the Church and about His return, and what that all means for us today. But for now, in this introduction, we need to know that this is the Revelation of Jesus Christ, so a lot of what we study will be about Him or given by Him. The Apostle John was chosen to record these things, and may be reflective of the words of John in John 21:24, “This is the disciple who testifies of these things, and wrote these things; and we know that his testimony is true,” as John wrote about the life and ministry of Jesus Christ. He will now teach us about the coming of the Lord Jesus Christ in the book of The Revelation of Jesus Christ.

Dear LORD,

As we begin this study in the book of The Revelation of Jesus Christ please help us to prepare our hearts and minds not for what we want or expect to learn, but for what You will teach us as our desire is to draw closer to You and prepare ourselves for the time of the return of Your One and only Son Jesus. In Jesus name I pray, amen.
