Mark 9:49-50

In Mark 9:49-50 (NKJV) Jesus alludes to “everyone will be seasoned with fire, and every sacrifice will be seasoned with salt.” The “fire” is to be seen in light of purification as in the new life that is the gift of salvation in Christ Jesus. The salt is in reference to having a flavorful life through the new life found in the life-gift from God in the same salvation through Christ Jesus. The combination of the two; a purified and flavorful life in giving one’s life to Christ Jesus is a good thing, but the new life in Christ Jesus must be exercised and utilized as to not lose the abundant flavor of life that one is called to from God – in Christ. The Bible teaches us in Colossians 4:6, “Let your speech always be with grace, seasoned with salt, that you may know how you ought to answer each one.”

This is a command to “have salt in yourselves, and have peace with one another” (Mark 9:50b).

I believe Colossians 4:6 to be a good example for us in this Bible lesson as it commands us to always have our speech/words be accompanied with grace and to be flavorful for those we are speaking to that they would receive our words with a good attitude, both from us and them. And also that we would know how to speak to one another with such an attitude. This is our Lord Jesus’ desire for us as He has shown compassion for us in taking our sins to the cross, so should we be compassionate to each other in our words and deeds. Jesus commands us in John 13:34-35, “A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another. By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.”

Dear LORD,

It is tough sometimes for us to use the right words when we are trying to, and it is easy for us to lash out at one another in the moment without thinking about Your command for us to always be kind and helpful to one another in our actions and words. Please help us to always think of Your great love for us in the saving grace You extend to us to save us from sin that we would extend the same attitude of grace and mercy to one another – in Christ. In Jesus name I pray, amen.
