Mark 9:36-37

Jesus continues to teach His disciples about being great, which by Jesus’ definition means that they must humble themselves to the point of being a servant (Mark 9:35). The Bible teaches us in Mark 9:36-37 (NKJV), “Then He took a little child and set him in the midst of them. And when He had taken him in His arms, He said to them, “Whoever receives one of these little children in My name receives Me; and whoever receives Me, receives not Me but Him who sent Me.” Jesus has come to this world as the One and only Son/Child of God to serve and to give His life as a ransom for everyone who will believe in Him (John 3:16-17); to be a disciple of Jesus, one must strive to represent Him in their life, seeking greatness is not the attitude of Jesus, but that of a child – a servant of others putting them before Himself as He represents this in His life by taking the sins of the world to the cross. To lower oneself to serving/receiving a child is to be a servant to the servant.

This is a promise and example of being a servant/disciple of Jesus.

This is a lesson in humility unto greatness. Jesus came to lower Himself from His heavenly divine position to take on the form of a human – His creation. He did this because of His great love and compassion for us, because He saw us in our sins and, being His children, He took on the form of His children to come to us and rescue us from the sins that plague us and keep us from being righteous. It is because of the humility of Jesus that makes Him so great to us. The Apostle Paul declares in Philippians 2:5-11, “Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus, who, being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God, but made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, and coming in the likeness of men. And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross. Therefore God also has highly exalted Him and given Him the name which is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth, and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.”

Dear LORD,

Please help us to realize and understand that in our quest for greatness in humility in Your eyes. That we would take on the form of a servant as You did for us in saving us from sin in the physical being of our Lord and Savior Jesus. It is Him in which we must imitate as we give up our own desires to seek and follow Your desires for our lives as we put on salvation in Christ Jesus and reflect Him in our lives. In Jesus name I pray, amen.
