Mark 6:47-52
In Mark 6:47-52 evening has come; Jesus’ disciples are out to sea; the crowd has been dispersed; and Jesus is alone. In Mark 6:48 we learn that the wind was blowing against the boat as the disciples of Jesus were straining to row against it. About the fourth watch of the night (which would have been sometime between 3:00 a.m. to 6:00 a.m.) the Bible teaches us that Jesus came to them as He was walking on the sea, as the first watch would have been from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.; the second watch from 9:00 p.m. to 12:00 a.m.; the third watch from 12:00 a.m. to 3:00 a.m.; and the fourth watch from 3:00 a.m. to 6:00 a.m. Jesus’ disciples, being weary from struggling to row the boat against the wind and simply tired from the events of the day, saw Jesus walking on the water and thought He was a ghost (Mark 6:49). Jesus said to them in Mark 6:50 (NKJV), “Be of good cheer! It is I; do not be afraid.” And then Jesus got in the boat with them; the winds calmed, and the waves lowered; and the disciples of Jesus were once again amazed as they still yet did not realize that Jesus held the power of Almighty God within Himself (Mark 6:51-52).
This is an example of the power of Almighty God in His One and only Son Jesus.
The Bible uses the same word in Jesus rescuing His disciples in time of need as it does when Jesus flees temptation – immediately. When Jesus felt temptation in His earthly body in Mark 6:45 as He experienced temptation just as we do, He immediately sought a remedy to the situation He found Himself in. But Jesus also immediately calms the seas of life when He takes over the situations of our lives that are out of our control. He may not remedy them immediately, but He calms them as He has promised that He would never leave us and that He gives us peace in the midst of trials and temptation (John 14:18, 27).
Dear LORD,
It was hard for the disciples of Jesus to realize and understand Your power at work in Your One and only Son Jesus – Yourself in human form as You also reside in Your Holy Spirit. It is hard for us too to understand how You can be in three interties at once, all the time. But please help us to realize and understand that You are Almighty God and You can do anything. Your power and omnipotence continue to amaze us as Your omnipresence is everywhere all the time. But please help us to know that You are God, and You can do it – in the lives of the disciples of Jesus many years ago, and You can do it in our lives today. Please let it be so LORD. In Jesus name I pray, amen.
