Mark 5:37-43

In Mark 5:37-43, Jesus, after receiving the news that the daughter of the synagogue ruler had died, and had given the command to not be afraid, but only that they should believe (Mark 5:36), He, Peter, James, and John continued to the house of the synagogue ruler.  Jesus interrupted those who were weeping and said to them, “Why make this commotion and weep?  The child is not dead, but sleeping” (Mark 5:39, NKJV).  Jesus removed everyone from the house as they ridiculed Him for his comments (Mark 5:40) and only allowed Peter, James, and John, along with the parents of the child to go with Him into the room where the child was.  Jesus took the child by the hand and commanded her to get up.  The Bible teaches us in Mark 5:42 that the girl got up and walked, showing that she was physical abled once again.  Then Jesus, possibly to prove her physical status and that she was not merely a ghost, commanded that she be given something to eat, and that they tell no one of this event.

This is an example of the healing power of Jesus to raise the dead to life.

Jesus would soon be crucified and then be raised from the dead Himself, and it was important that Jesus give an example of His power to raise us from the dead.  Jesus declares in John 5:24-30, “Most assuredly, I say to you, he who hears My word and believes in Him who sent Me has everlasting life, and shall not come into judgment, but has passed from death into life.  Most assuredly, I say to you, the hour is coming, and now is, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God; and those who hear will live.  For as the Father has life in Himself, so He has granted the Son to have life in Himself, and has given Him authority to execute judgment also, because He is the Son of Man.  Do not marvel at this; for the hour is coming in which all who are in the graves will hear His voice and come forth – those who have done good, to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil, to the resurrection of condemnation.  I can of Myself do nothing.  As I hear, I judge; and My judgment is righteous, because I do not seek My own will but the will of the Father who sent Me.”  This is reflective of the declaration of Jesus in John 3:16-21.

Dear LORD,

This truly is part of the mystery that the Apostle Paul speaks and teaches us about in his writings, and to be raised from the dead is truly a miracle.  As Jesus gave the command to the parents of the child in Mark 5:36 to “not be afraid; only believe” is a command that we all need to grasp more deeply into our own lives.  Please help us to believe, LORD.  In Jesus name I pray, amen.
