Mark 4:35-41

After Jesus had spent the day teaching the multitude with parables, and then explaining them to His disciples (Mark 4:1-34), “when evening had come, He said to them, ‘Let us cross over to the other side’” (Mark 4:35, NKJV).  He and His disciples got into a boat and pushed out to sea, along with some smaller boats that followed them (Mark 4:36).  But after a while, a storm arose and the waves became so great that they began to overtake the boat (Mark 4:37).  His disciples became weary and came to Him for help, but found Him “asleep on a pillow” (Mark 4:38).  They pleaded with Him for their lives, possibly that He might help them bail the water out of the boat.  But Jesus simply arose, scolded the wind for being too strong, and said to the sea (Mark 4:39), “Peace, be still!”  Mark 4:39b states, “And the wind ceased and there was a great calm.”  Then, in Mark 4:40, Jesus questioned His disciples of why they were so fearful and how could they have no faith?  His disciples were amazed and questioned (Mark 4:41), “Who can this be, that even the wind and the sea obey Him!”

This is a promise that as all things were made through Jesus (John 1:2-3), He has ultimate control over all things, even nature.

When the strength of the wind in our lives rises and becomes too much for us to handle on our own, know that Jesus is always right there with us “in the boat” waiting for us to come to Him and ask for His help.  He is faithful and will help us…if we will ask.

This passage of Mark 4:35-41 has been recorded so that we will know that Jesus is all powerful God incarnate.  “39Then He arose and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, ‘Peace, be still!’  And the wind ceased and there was a great calm.  40But He said to them, ‘Why are you so fearful?  How is it that you have no faith?’  41And they feared exceedingly, and said to one another, ‘Who can this be, that even the wind and the sea obey Him!’”  Call on Jesus when the storms of life get rough, and He will calm the winds of life for you too!

Dear LORD,

We struggle to gain hope and faith in Jesus to help us through this life, but that is why You sent Him – Yourself incarnate – to save us; to help us through this world and into spiritual reality for eternity.  Please help us to believe – to believe in the One who has power over even nature to calm the winds that rise in our lives.  In Jesus name I pray, amen.
