2 Corinthians 9:6-7

In 2 Corinthians 9:6-7 the Apostle Paul encourages the congregation of the church at Corinth in their giving.  He states, “But this I say: He who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and he who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully.  So let each one give as he purposes in his heart, not grudgingly or of necessity; for God loves a cheerful giver” (2 Corinthians 9:6-7, NKJV).  This is in line with the teachings of Jesus found in Luke 6:38 as He declares, “Give, and it will be given to you: good measure, pressed down, shaken together, and running over will be put into your bosom.  For with the same measure that you use, it will be measured back to you.”  This is a direct reflection of the commandment that Jesus gives in John 13:34-35 stating, “A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another.  By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.”  We learn in Galatians 6:7, “Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, that he will also reap.”  And in Proverbs 22:7-9 we learn from King Solomon, noted as the wisest man of his time, “The rich rules over the poor, And the rod of his anger will fail.  He who has a generous eye will be blessed, For he gives of his bread to the poor.”

This is a promise that we will receive by what we give.

The Bible teaches us in many places that we should have a heart of generosity to others, and in doing so, we will receive blessings from God for our obedience to Him in following His ways instead of the greedy ways of this world.  We all want and desire to provide for our families and have a comfortable way of life in this world, but Jesus teaches us that loving one another is the gift in this world that will allow us to be the receiver of it in our walk and obedience with Him.

Dear LORD,

Thank You for showing us that a generous heart in giving will allow us a generous portion in receiving Your blessings on our lives.  Please help us to give from a caring heart that is reflective of our salvation in Christ Jesus and of following His teachings for our lives.  In Jesus name I pray, amen.
