2 Corinthians 5:20-21

Whether by intent from the Apostle Paul in defending his ministry team or simply by God’s inspiration and guidance, Paul sums up his entire meaning for his call to ministry in 2 Corinthians 5:20-21 as he declares, “Now then, we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God were pleading through us: we implore you on Christ’s behalf, be reconciled to God.  For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.”

This is the primary call to ministry for us all in sharing the message of the gospel.

In my own personal Bible I have dissected 2 Corinthians 5:21 so that I, when I read this verse, may see just how important it is to understand for our relationships with God through Christ Jesus.  I have circled “for us” as God made “Him who knew no sin to be sin ‘for us.’”  God sent Jesus “for us.”  The next word that I have circled in this passage is “we” as it is for us all that God sent His Son “to be” sin “for us.”  Then I have underlined “might become…in Him,” with the remainder of the verse twice underlined “the righteousness of God.”  “We,” “might become,” is God giving us the option to choose to accept His offer to us to become, through Christ Jesus, God’s righteousness.  That is a pretty bold statement, but it’s true in the victory God has over Satan through the works of Jesus in living a sinless life and then dying sinless on the cross to death and then rising from the dead in defeat of death as death has no hold on the sinless One which is only Christ Jesus.  “Might become” is our opportunity to become the righteousness of God by believing in Jesus and professing Him our Savior.  We are the results of God’s love in defeating disobedience as was first introduced/experienced by Lucifer.  We are doing our part in the defeat of Satan by putting Jesus first in our lives – it is to the glory of God, and in so, He rewards us for our obedience to Him by making us, in our new lives through Christ Jesus, His righteousness.  We are the righteousness of God.  Hallelujah! Thank You LORD!

Dear LORD,

We are so blessed to receive Your gift for our faithfulness to You to become Your righteousness, as there is none greater.  You are Almighty God and most gracious to those who are obedient to You.  You have saved us from sin and allowed us to be a part of the defeat of sin by professing Jesus our Savior and believing in our hearts that You have raised Him from the dead in victory over sin, death, and Satan (Romans 10:9-10).  Thank You so much for saving us from sin and proclaiming us to be Your righteousness – in Christ!  In Jesus name I pray, amen.
