1 Corinthians 16:1-4

In 1 Corinthians 16:1-4 the Apostle Paul gives the congregation of the church at Corinth guidance and direction for tithing – that each should set aside a portion of their profits, according to an amount that is appropriate for each person, to give to the Church.  These tithes were taken to the Church in Jerusalem and were to be taken by a trustworthy person, and that person be accompanied by another trustworthy person as to ensure that the tithes would make it successfully to their destination.

This is a command to support the Church through our tithe.

Tithing today is a little different than in the first century, but the reasoning is the same – to support the Church.  Tithing began with Abraham in Genesis 14 and God commanded the Levites to tithe a tenth (which is where we get the idea of tithing a tenth) from Numbers 18.  The Apostle Paul goes a little further and commands the church at Corinth to give as is appropriate for each person according to their income.  The debate may go on as to the proper amount that we tithe, however, the main point is that we support the Church with our tithe – that we give to support the outreach of the Church today – in Christ.

Dear LORD,

Please speak to our hearts today and help us to decide on the proper amount that we each should tithe.  And LORD, please help us to see that if we all gave a tithe to the Church, the Church – Your house, would be the most financially sound of all the world – in Christ.  In Jesus name I pray, amen.
