1 Corinthians 5:6-8

The Apostle Paul has noted some attitudes and actions from within the congregation of the church at Corinth that are not becoming of a Christian.  In 1 Corinthians 5:6-8 he compares that to leaven, which we today would compare to yeast that makes bread rise.  It only takes a small amount of leaven, when mixed in the dough, will cause the entire batch of dough to rise.  In like manner, it only takes the allowance of a small amount of sin to go undisciplined to become mixed throughout the entire congregation.

Jesus served as the Passover Lamb for all who will believe in Him – for all Christians.  Unleavened bread was served with the Passover in remembrance of the exodus when God freed His people Israel from the captivity of the Egyptians (Exodus 12).  As Christ Jesus has served as the Passover Lamb, the spiritual unleavened bread is representative of sincerity and truth in our new lives in Christ Jesus (1 Corinthians 5:8).

This is a command to live as Christians in the sincerity and truth of Christ Jesus.

“malice and wickedness”, as the Apostle Paul describes in 1 Corinthians 5:8 (NKJV) are reflective of the sinful nature clinging to us as we enter our new lives of forgiveness in Christ Jesus.  Jesus has forgiven us for all our sins, this includes malice and wickedness, so we should leave them in the past and strive to live in sincerity and truth which is reflective of our Savior Jesus.

Dear LORD,

Things happen in our lives that cause sudden outbursts of malice and wickedness.  We need Your help to prompt us before we react to react in sincerity and truth.  In Jesus name I pray, amen.
