1 Corinthians 1:22-25

In 1 Corinthians 1:22-25 the Apostle Paul explains his teaching from 1 Corinthians 1:18-21.  The Jews desire to see the physical proof – they want to see a sign from God as is reflective of the ways of the Old Testament, in which they ironically refused to believe when they were given a sign.  Jesus states in Matthew 12:39-40 (NKJV), “An evil and adulterous generation seeks after a sign, and no sign will be given to it except the sign of the prophet Jonah.  For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the great fish, so will the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.”

The Greeks, on the other hand, seek wisdom.  But the wisdom they seek is not the wisdom of God but the wisdom of man.  They seek to be self-sufficient and righteous in their own mind.  1 Corinthians 1:23-25 declares, “23but we preach Christ crucified, to the Jews a stumbling block and to the Greeks foolishness, 24but to those who are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God.  25Because the foolishness of God is wiser than men, and the weakness of God is stronger than men.”

God, in His foolishness, if there is such a thing, is still yet so far above man in wisdom that there is no comparison; God, in His weakness, if there is such a thing, is still yet so much stronger than man in his own strength that is weakness in comparison to the strength of God.

This is a promise that man does not seek the wisdom of God.

This is a promise that the wisdom of God is a stumbling block and foolishness to man.

This is a promise that in the foolishness of the message of the cross, to man, is a greater power in the cross of Christ than of any wisdom that man could ever obtain on his own.

We all desire to be wise in our own minds.  It is in our nature as humans.  But the message that Paul is reaching out to teach us is that we are so much less than what God has for us in His plan for our lives.  But we must let go of seeking our own ways of wisdom, and begin seeking the wisdom of God.  We must put Him first in our lives; if we do, we will find a wisdom far greater than anything we could have ever imagined on our own.  Trust Jesus today with your life and you will see the light of a truly new life – in Christ.

Dear LORD,

We want Your guidance in our lives.  We want Your comforting and love to be felt in our lives.  We want to have wisdom that touches our hearts with peace and joy.  This only comes from putting our faith in You – in Your One and only Son Jesus.  We are weak in our own wisdom, please help us to see that in Jesus we will find the way, the truth, and the life that can only be found through believing – believing that Your way for our lives is better than our way for our lives.  Please call us to believe in Jesus – the Savior of the world.  In Jesus name I pray, amen.
