Matthew 26:36-39

In Matthew 26:36 Jesus and His disciples arrive at Gethsemane, and He instructs His disciples to wait for Him as He chooses Peter, James, and John/ the sons of Zebedee to go on a little farther with Him.  We know that James and John are the sons of Zebedee, as is stated in the NKJV, from Matthew 4:21 as the Bible teaches us, “Going on from there, He saw two other brothers, James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, in the boat with Zebedee their father, mending their nets…”  We can gain further assurance of this in Mark 14:33 as the same is taught, “And He took Peter, James, and John with Him,…”  Then, in Matthew 26:38 is the first indication from the Bible that Jesus is preparing to face the sins of all humanity as He declares, “My soul is exceedingly sorrowful, even to death.”  Jesus was beginning to feel within His soul the sins of all humanity, past, present, and future.  Jesus instructed Peter, James, and John to wait while He went on to pray.  And as God’s wrath for sin begins to unfold on His One and only Son Jesus, He falls on His face and prays these words, “O My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from Me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as You will(Matthew 26:39).

This is the moment at which Jesus began to have unfolded on Him the sins of this world.

The humanity of Jesus was crying out to His heavenly Father for mercy, but He still yet knew through His deity of the importance of the events about to unfold for the salvation that He would provide for all humanity.  Each one of us was on Jesus’ mind that day.  He knows you and He knows me.  He died for us so that we may live with Him for eternity and celebrate the life that only He can give.  He is waiting for you to come to Him and receive the gift of life.  He has never turned any sincere heart away asking forgiveness, and He will forgive your sins and rejoice with you if you will simply ask

Dear LORD,

Please prepare our hearts for this walk through the pain and heartache that Jesus felt for each and every one of us as He prepares to be falsely accused, beaten, tried, found guilty, and crucified for me and for everyone who will put their faith in Him – to save us from sin as He would rise from the dead claiming victory over sin, death, and Satan once for all.  In Jesus name I pray, amen.
