Matthew 26:31-35

For Jesus to be the ultimate sacrifice for all sins, He had to be left by Himself to take on the punishment; His disciples could not be with Him during this time.  In Matthew 26:31 Jesus predicts that His disciples will all flee from Him as is recorded in Zachariah 13:7 as Jesus quotes,

‘I will strike the Shepherd,

And the sheep of the flock will be

            scattered.’

But Jesus leaves hope in Matthew 26:32 as He gives direction for His disciples that He will be raised from the dead and be waiting for them in Galilee.

This is a promise of the Savior to stand alone as He takes upon Himself the sins of the world.

There could be absolutely no doubt to the fact that Jesus alone took our punishment to the cross and died for our sins.  His disciples could not be crucified with Him as the assumption could then be made that possibly they too died for our sins.  But God’s plan is full-proof with no holes in it to lead to any other possibility than that Jesus alone died for our sins.  The disciples of Jesus, as we will see, will abandon Him at His arrest in the garden (Matthew 26:50-56).

Dear LORD,

Your closest followers of Jesus fled when trouble arose.  We too are scared and we run when trouble arises.  Please help us to learn from Your Word that You are with us always and will never forsake us, even when we run from You.  You take us back and forgive us as the prodigal son returning home seeking refuge.  Thank You so much LORD for Your great love for us that we could never imagine of its limitlessness – in Christ.  In Jesus name I pray, amen.
