Matthew 24:1-2

God sent Jesus to teach the world that physical things are temporary and that the important things that will last for eternity are spiritual.  The irony in Matthew 24:1-2 is shown as Jesus leaves the temple and His disciples pause to show Him the, “buildings of the temple.”  Jesus has just finished giving “woes” to the scribes and Pharisees concerning their own ways which are not in the will of God.  Jesus has shown them that their physical things are not what connects them to eternal life, but the spiritual condition of the heart is what matters in the eyes of God.  The temple would be destroyed, but Jesus teaches us that God’s temple is in our hearts – our bodies.  The Bible teaches us in 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 (NKJV), “Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own?  For you were bought at a price; therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God’s.”

This is a promise that earthly/physical things are temporary, but spiritual things last for eternity.

Jesus declares in John 14:15-18, 26, “If you love Me, keep My commandments.  And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever – the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you.  I will not leave you orphans; I will come to you…But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you.”  Jesus teaches us in Matthew 6:19-21, “Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal; but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal.  For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”

Put your trust in Jesus today and He will save you for eternity!

Dear LORD,

As you bless us with physical things, please help us to see that physical things are temporary in this world.  Please help us to see that the condition of our hearts is the spiritual decision that we can change by believing in You and putting our faith in Jesus as our Savior.  Please help us to put You first, above all, so that we may receive Your Holy Spirit to dwell within us and guide us to eternal life – in Christ!  In Jesus name I pray, amen.
