Matthew 23:29-36

In Matthew 23:29-36 Jesus adds yet another “Woe” to the scribes and Pharisees, and once again refers to them as “hypocrites.”  The scribes and Pharisees claim as Jesus states in Matthew 23:30, “If we had lived in the days of our fathers, we would not have been partakers with them in the blood of the prophets.”  But Jesus reveals how they continue to persecute innocent men through their own self-righteousness that will be held accountable when the time comes.

This is an example of the blindness that is a result of self-righteousness.

We all have issues with self-righteousness.  We look down on others – we don’t mean to, but we do, even when we are extending a helping hand, we do it because we consider ourselves better than the one in which we are helping.  The truth is, we are better provided for than those in which we are helping – that’s why we are helping them.  But is your heart in the right place while you are helping others, or is it condescending?  We need to make sure that the look in our eyes is caring and loving, and that our actions are not simply done to be added to those being praised, but to bring praise to God through our salvation in Christ Jesus.

There are many people throughout the world that are in need today; we are God’s eyes, ears, hands, and feet to reach out in humble, sincere assistance.  Let us do our work and deeds for Jesus – not ourselves, as was the case with the scribes and Pharisees.

Dear LORD,

You have created us with caring hearts.  You have given us all different gifts so that we may look after the needs of others.  Please help us to be considerate and not condescending as we reach out to others who are less fortunate.  The truth is, we all are in need of the love You have shown to us in Your One and only Son Christ Jesus unto forgiveness and eternal life.  Please help us to show the attitude of Jesus through our lives, to others that you have put in our paths to help in time of need.  Please help us to reflect Jesus in our lives – to others.  In Jesus name I pray, amen.
