Matthew 11:20-24

In Matthew 11:20-24, Jesus rebukes the cities of Chorazin, Bethsaida, and Capernaum for not repenting after the many “mighty works” that He had done in these cities.  Jesus states that it will be more tolerable in the day of judgment for the cities of Tyre, Sidon, and Sodom than for these cities that did not repent of their sins.  The point Jesus is trying to make is that these cities have been blessed to have seen the “mighty works” that Jesus has done in them, but they have refused to open their hearts to Him and receive the Savior of the world.  God destroyed the city of Sodom in Genesis 18-19 because the people there were so evil, but Jesus says that if they would have seen the “mighty works” (Matthew 11:23, NKJV), they would have repented and God would not have destroyed them.

This is an example of the hardness of man’s hearts and refusal to repent from sin.

These cities that Jesus rebukes because of their refusal to accept Him are no different than many cities today.  We have busy lifestyles that keep our schedule full with no time for God.  We get lost in sin, and it overtakes us to the point of blindness to the gift that God offers us in His Son Jesus, whom He sent to save the world from sin (John 3:16-17).  There is nothing in this world that is more important to us than to open our eyes and hearts to Jesus.  In a world that is so dark, it is up to us to share the love of Christ Jesus that lights the way to salvation for eternity.

Dear LORD,

We are surrounded by the darkness of this world, but You are the light that shines through our lives so others may be drawn to You through our example as we seek to reflect Jesus through our lives to others.  Please help us to represent You well and give us the strength to let the light of Christ Jesus shine through us to all those around us.  In Jesus name I pray, amen.
