Matthew 5:13

Jesus is teaching His disciples (Matthew 5:1-2); He is preparing them for the mission that He will soon send them on to spread the gospel of the kingdom of heaven (Matthew 10), and eventually will send them to, “‘Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.’  Amen (Matthew 28:19-20, NKJV).”

Jesus tells His disciples in Matthew 5:13, “You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt loses its flavor, how shall it be seasoned?”  Salt is flavor, and the disciples of Jesus are being prepared to be the flavor of the earth in sharing the good news of the kingdom of heaven – that the Savior has arrived and all who put their trust in Him will be saved (John 1:12-13).  But Jesus also explains the importance of the message and the mission He is about to give to His disciples as He teaches that if the salt loses its flavor, it is then good for nothing.

This is a promise and example that the disciples of Jesus are the salt that flavors the world.

As we put our faith in Jesus, we too become His disciples and become responsible to spread the gospel of the kingdom of heaven with others, as that is how the good news of Christ Jesus and the kingdom of heaven is spread today.  We are the salt of the earth as Christians.  We are the salt of the earth today – in Christ; may God help us to not lose our flavor that He has given us through our faith in Him.

Dear LORD,

It is the desire of this ministry to help others, and myself, to learn that being a Christian is a call to action; it is a call to share what You have done, and are doing in our lives with others, that they too may be led to You and open their hearts to Jesus and be saved from the evils of this world.  It is our duty as Christians to support one another – in Christ – and help each other through the trials and temptations that this world will throw at us.  Jesus teaches us that we will face persecution, trials, and tribulation if we put our faith in Him (John 15:18-25).  But He has put us here together to support one another so His love may flow through the salt of the earth that He has made us to be – today.  Please help us to do so LORD and be to the praise of Your glory.  In Jesus name I pray, amen.
