Romans 16:1-2

In this last chapter of Paul’s letter to the Church at Rome, he begins by commending several people.  In the case of Phoebe (Romans 16:1-2) it appears as if she has been a servant of the church in Cenchrea and has come to the aid of many people in the name of Christ Jesus.  Many scholars believe that she is very possibly one of the people in charge of delivering this letter to the church at Rome.  Paul requests that she be given assistance in whatever she is in need of which implies that she is coming to Rome.

This is a command to take care of one another in Christ Jesus.

This is an example of living out/putting to application the command of Jesus in John 13:34-35 to love one another as He has first loved us.

I believe this is a great example of what we follow in the church today when a visiting pastor or evangelist comes to town to speak for a special occasion.  They are taken in by the church and given a place to stay.  In many cases this is a call for a special meal after the service to have a meet and greet in time of fellowship with the visitor.

But we don’t have to have a special visitor to reach out to those in need, just as Phoebe did in looking after the needs of those in the Church and the visitors that came to town.  We have people in need in our communities that we may reach out to in care of one another that show the love of Christ Jesus working through our lives.  We are the arms, legs, and all the body of Christ Jesus in our communities today.

Dear LORD,

Please give us a compassion for others as is commanded by Jesus in John 13:34-35 to love our neighbor as Jesus has loved us, that we too would show the love of Jesus to all those we come in contact with, that we would truly be disciples of Jesus.  In Jesus name I pray, amen.
