Romans 7:7-12

With the law leading us to the knowledge of sin, the question (Paul states) must be asked, “Is the law sin?” (Romans 7:7, NKJV).  But once again as in Romans 6:1-2, 15, Paul answers the question with a resounding “Certainly not!”  He then gives the example of knowing/having knowledge of what it means to covet, which came from the law (Exodus 20:17; Deuteronomy 5:21).  We have gained the knowledge of sin by the commandments of the law, for without the rule there is no way of knowing right from wrong; so the commandment gives way to the knowledge of sin/disobedience and in so, brings sin to light and the temptation of it, which is brought about by the evil schemes of Satan in his attempt to prevent us from drawing close to our Creator God (Romans 7:9-11).  But the law, bringing about the knowledge of sin is not in itself sin, but is holy as it shows us the proper/right way to righteousness (Romans 7:12).

This is an example that the law in itself is not sin, but brings sin to our knowledge.

If the commandment/rule had never been given to not lie, the knowledge that lying is wrong would never have been realized.  But because we are commanded to not lie, we are aware that lying is wrong in the eyes of God.  The commandment makes us aware of the wrongs that can be committed in the physical life, but this does not make the commandment part of the wrong, for if we do not know that something is wrong, we will never know that we need to make it right in the eyes of God.

Dear LORD,

Please help us to see that the law was brought about to show us the sin that is in this world so that we would have the knowledge of sin, and in so develop a desire to receive forgiveness of sin and draw close to You through our Savior Jesus.  In Jesus name I pray, amen.
