Romans 1:1c-4

The “gospel of God” (Romans 1:1c, NKJV) which the Apostle Paul is called has been promised through the prophets of the Holy Scriptures and has been long awaited for by the Israelites for the salvation of God’s people (Isaiah 42:1-9).  Paul proclaims in Romans 1:3-4 (NKJV), that this gospel of God is, “3concerning His Son Jesus Christ our Lord, who was born of the seed of David according to the flesh, 4and declared to be the Son of God with power according to the Spirit of holiness, by the resurrection from the dead.  The genealogy of Jesus is documented in Matthew 1 and supports this statement by Paul.

This is the promise of the gospel concerning Jesus Christ, the Son of God, and of His power through His Holy Spirit to His resurrection from the dead.

Jesus states in His prayer just before His arrest in John 17:20-21 (NIV), “My prayer is not for them alone.  I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message, that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you.  May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me.”  In this statement and prayer by our Savior Jesus Christ, I believe, is the root of this letter of the Apostle Paul to the church in Rome.

Dear LORD,

This letter to the church in Rome is some of the most powerful instruction to salvation in Christ Jesus that we will encounter in Your Word.  It is based on the revelation that You have given the Apostle Paul in Your calling of Him to preach the gospel message of our Savior Jesus Christ and Your kingdom of heaven.  Please open our hearts to this study of Your word that we all may grow in our relationship with You through Christ Jesus our Savior, and that You would call many to open their hearts to Jesus for the first time.  In Jesus name I pray, amen.
