Hebrews 13:5-6

The author of Hebrews gives instructions for personal conduct toward one another that is reflective of the brotherly love that he spoke of in Hebrews 1:1.  In this case, he describes what the attitude of the heart and mind should be in brotherly love.  (1) Without covetousness.  To covet means to desire or lust with envy after something that belongs to someone else.  (2) To be content.  The author of Hebrews quotes Deuteronomy 31:6, 8; Joshua 1:5 which states (NKJV), “I will never leave you nor forsake you.”  The author of Hebrews quotes Psalm 118:6 in Hebrews 13:6 which states,

“The LORD is my helper;

             I will not fear.

             What can man do to me?”

This is a command to not covet.

This is a command to be content.

This is a promise that the LORD will provide for the needs of those who put their faith in Him.

There will always be someone who has more “stuff” than we do.  There will always be someone who has “nicer” things than we do.  But there will always be those who have less than we do.  This lesson in Hebrews teaches us to be content with what the LORD has given us and know that He is always with us who put our faith in Him.  As He spoke to Joshua, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.”  Jesus gives this same promise through His Holy Spirit in John 14:15-18, 26-27.

Dear LORD,

Please help us to see that there will always be others that have more things than we do, but that You will supply for us all that we need to be content if we will put and keep our faith in You through our Savior Jesus, whom You sent to save the world from sin (John 3:16-17).  Please help us to see that we all have something that we can give to help others and that they always have something that they can give to us in the brotherly love and care for one another – in Christ.  In Jesus name I pray, amen.
