Hebrews 13:2

In conjunction with Hebrews 13:1 which states (NKJV), “Let brotherly love continue.”, the author of Hebrews gives an additional command in Hebrews 13:2 – “Do not forget to entertain strangers, for by so doing some have unwittingly entertained angels.”  This is to make a determination that brotherly love is not just to be shown to those we love, as if only to our family and friends, but also to strangers, which includes everyone.

This is a command to let the love of Christ Jesus flow through our lives to anyone and everyone.

Sometimes God gives us tests to see our own fault and strengths.  Through these tests is growth in our relationship with God.  God may present someone in our path that is in need or maybe even someone whose actions we view as offensive.  In these situations, God wants us to practice showing His love through our lives.  Two very important things can be gained through this: (1) we are learning to reflect Jesus to everyone.  Jesus tells us in Matthew 25:35, 40 that we should feed the hungry, give those who are thirsty a drink, to clothe those who are naked, to visit those who are sick, and to visit those who are in prison.  He says that by doing so to these, we are showing the same to Him.  These are the results of our salvation in Christ Jesus – the product of our salvation through which He offers to all who will believe in Him.  By conducting ourselves in the love of Christ Jesus through our faith in Him as our Savior, which is the compelling factor for us to do these things, will enable us to receive the blessings and growth that God is desiring us to have.  (2) Hebrews 13:2b tells us that one of these “people” that God brings into our path may in fact be one of His angels.

Dear LORD,

You teach us through Your word and through the ministry/teaching of Jesus to show love to one another.  Please help us to see that this includes everyone that we come in contact with, even strangers.  Please help us to always keep in mind that by following Your ways and teachings for our lives, that we may be entertaining Your heavenly angels.  We thank You for giving us blessings that warm our hearts for eternity in following Jesus.  In Jesus name I pray, amen.
