Hebrews 1:4

The writer of Hebrews tells us in Hebrews 1:4 that Jesus is superior to the angels as His name is greater than that of the angels.  The Apostle Paul proclaims in Ephesians 1:19-23 (ESV), “and what is the immeasurable greatness of his power toward us who believe, according to the working of his great might that he worked in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly places, far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and above every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the one to come.  And he put all things under his feet and gave him as head over all things to the church, which is his body, the fullness of him who fills all in all.”  Furthermore, the text tells us that the name of Jesus is greater than the angels as Jesus has obtained His name through inheritance, and it is an inheritance of being the Son of the most high God that not other may claim.

This is a promise that Jesus is higher, more excellent, and superior to the angels in being the only begotten Son of Almighty God.

Jesus proclaims in John 10:30 (NKJV), “I and My Father are one.”  And He continues in John 10:37-38 (NIV), “Do not believe me unless I do the works of my Father.  But if I do them, even though you do not believe me, believe the works, that you may know and understand that the Father is in me, and I in the Father.”  Jesus is God incarnate come to save the world from sin.  Jesus is the physical representation of the Almighty spiritual God of heaven.

The last thing Jesus did before He was arrested was pray; He prayed for Himself, for His disciples, and for us (those who believe in Him through the preaching of His disciples).  In this prayer Jesus prayed as is documented in John 17:21 (NKJV), “that  they all may be one, as You, Father, are in Me, and I in You; that they also may be one in Us. That the world may believe that You sent Me.”

Dear LORD,

Please help us to see that Jesus is above all the angels and His name is superior and excellent over every other name.  Please help us to understand that we may live in Christ, and in so, be living in You as to fulfill the prayer of Jesus in John 17 – in Christ.  In Jesus name I pray, amen.
