2 Peter 3:5-7

In 2 Peter 3:5-7 Peter is bringing to light that as the “scoffers” plead the case that nothing has changed since the beginning of creation (2 Peter 3:3-4), they look over the fact that God has already put an end to the world in the time of Noah through the great flood (Genesis 7:13-24).  The Apostle Peter adds in verse 7 that the heavens and the earth are now reserved by God’s word for judgment by fire as God’s word is not to be “willfully forgot” but will be accomplished in God’s own timing.

This is an example of how “scoffers” will twist and view God’s words in a false manner which is only intended to promote their false religion(s).

This is a reminder that God’s words are just and true and will be fulfilled in His timing.

There is an overarching story of the entirety of the Bible – Old Testament and New Testament.  This is God’s way of relaying His ultimate plan of salvation to all of humanity.  He walks us through the Old Testament to show of His supreme authority that all peoples may come to know of Him as the only true God of heaven.  He teaches us that being obedient to Him is His desire for us in having a loving relationship with us and that putting Him first is our number one priority in our physical lives.  He shows us that we, in and of our sinful selves, are not capable of being true to God as the sinful nature continues to pull us away from Him.  So He sent His one and only Son, in purity, to conquer sin for us and set us free from the grasp that it has on our lives so that we may experience true life in being forgiven in the purity of Christ Jesus.  The simplicity of it all is that He offers His forgiveness to us for free – we just have to ask with a sincere heart.  Jesus died with His arms open wide to receive all who will come to Him.  The problem is that Satan is more powerful than we are, and we cannot break his hold on us by ourselves.  We must first become aware of this and then believe that Jesus can and will set us free.  Believe, ask, receive, repent, live – in Christ.

Dear LORD,

The scoffers of this world are controlled by Satan and the sinful nature.  Please help us to overcome the false teachings of this world through hearing and study of Your Word – our textbook to life eternal in Christ Jesus our Savior.  Please help us to be active in sharing Your Word with others that we will build each other up in Christ Jesus and lead lost souls to a new life of forgiveness in Jesus – the only place to find true forgiveness.  In Jesus name I pray, amen.
