2 Peter 1:19-21

The Apostle Peter begins verse 19 (NKJV) with the words “And so” and is once again a reference to look back to the previous verse(s) and verifies the reasoning in which is the foundation for the following.  In this case Peter is confirming the “prophetic word” (2 Peter 1:19) in following what he has said in 2 Peter 1:16-18 concerning his “eyewitness” account of the words in which he writes through the power of God’s Holy Spirit working through himself and in the writings of the other apostles and the prophets (2 Peter 1:21), and not that of man’s own “private interpretation” as he states in verse 20.

This is a promise and example of the power of God working through His Holy Spirit to empower the apostles and prophets in the writing of His word.

As the Apostle Peter confirms the authenticity of the words written in the Bible, we must not overlook his words in the second part of verse 19 as he states, “which you do well to heed as a light that shines in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts.”  Jesus states in John 8:12, “I am the light of the world.  He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life.”  And in John 12:46 Jesus states, “I have come as a light into the world, that whoever believes in Me should not abide in darkness.”

In the last part of verse 19 Peter states, “until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts.”  We do well to heed the light that shines in a dark place, which is Jesus shining His light all around us while we still yet are living in the sinful nature, that we might see the light of Jesus and open our hearts to Him and dawn a new day of salvation in Him and continuously grow in our relationships with Him as He, the morning star, rises in our hearts (2 Peter 1:19).

Dear LORD,

As You shine Your light into all the dark places of this world, please help us to take heed of the new life in Christ Jesus, that we would take hold and pull Jesus tightly into our hearts and dawn a new day of life in the forgiveness of Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior and grow each day in our relationships with You – in Christ.  In Jesus name I pray, amen.
