1 Peter 5:12-14

These last three verses of 1 Peter close the letter and special notice is given to Silvanus (Silas) who, most likely wrote this letter by the direction of the Apostle Peter.  Peter gives his approval that this letter has his blessing in the, “true grace of God” as he states in verse 12.

He sends greetings from what is most likely the Church in Rome, although is referred to as Babylon (in which the Church at Rome has been referred to in other writings).  In addition, he sends greetings from his traveling companion Mark (John Mark), and then instructs the Beloved to greet one another with a holy kiss, which is an act of showing love, tenderheartedness, and compassion for one another in Christ Jesus.  Lastly, Peter gives a blessing of peace for all who are in Christ Jesus.

This is an example of the closing of a letter during biblical times, giving acknowledgement to others and pronouncing blessing and peace.

This is a great example of giving credit to others who have been a blessing to us.  We too many times strive to take all the credit for something in which we have had much help in accomplishing.  The greed and arrogance of the sinful nature is hard at work to promote selfishness and point the finger at me, me, me.  But Jesus teaches us to include all those around us in caring respect for the help and guidance that we get from others.  This is showing humility, compassion, courtesy, and a love for one another just as Jesus first loved us, so we too should love one another (John 13:34-35).  In this is promoting peace, not just for ourselves but for all those around us in properly reflecting Christ through our lives.

Dear LORD,

The Apostle Peter gives us a great example of including those who help us accomplish our mission in that we all share in the blessings together, and in that promotes a caring, tenderheartedness, and courtesy that is reflecting of our faith in Christ Jesus who teaches us to have love for one another.  Please fill us with Your Holy Spirit and give us hearts of compassion for others – in Christ.  In Jesus name I pray, amen.
