1 Peter 3:21-22

The Apostle Peter ends chapter 3 with an encouragement for being baptized.  He says in verse 21 (NKJV), “not the removal of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God, through the resurrection of Jesus Christ…”  Peter goes on to say that Jesus, “has gone into heaven and is at the right hand of God” with all authority being given to Him.

This is an example of baptism in Christ Jesus.

In the first century, as well as for today, being baptized is a public confirmation of one’s faith in Jesus.  It provides a “breaking out” of the secluded shell of the sinful nature and announces one’s new life in Christ Jesus.  New believers were somewhat hesitant in Peter’s day to be baptized because of the persecution of Christians during that time, so Peter is giving encouragement to be baptized and to take a stand for Jesus.  This advice holds true for us still today.  One should not be embarrassed about their faith in Jesus but make the public conformation that fills the soul with joy – in Christ.  That is baptism – that is announcing the joy of Christ Jesus in one’s heart, mind, soul, and strength.

Dear LORD,

Please help us to see that being baptized is a joyful celebration of announcing our faith in our Savior Jesus who died to set us free from sin that we may have eternal life.  Thank You for filling us with Your Holy Spirit and the joy that is found only in Christ Jesus.  In Jesus name I pray, amen.
