2 Timothy 3:16–17
In 2 Timothy 3:15 (NKJV) the Apostle Paul states, “15and that from childhood you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.” He further explains in 2 Timothy 3:16-17, “16All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, 17that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.”
All of those who wrote the words found in the Bible were personally inspired by God through His Holy Spirit working in their lives. God’s Holy Spirit is clearly visible in the lives of the Old Testament prophets as well as in the promise of God’s Holy Spirit as declared in the New Testament. God spoke to Adam and Eve, Cain, Noah, Abraham, Jacob, David, Solomon, and many others as is documented in the Bible. God speaks to our hearts through His Holy Word and Holy Spirit in cooperation with one another. For doctrine – for learning the ways in which the LORD God desires us to lead our lives. For reproof – to check its authority against itself to build our confidence in it. For correction – for making proper decisions in the face of controversy. For instruction in righteousness – for leading us to true righteousness found in our salvation in Christ Jesus. And in 2 Timothy 3:17 we learn why this is necessary, “17that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.”
This is a promise that all Scripture comes from and was inspired by God.
This is a promise of the importance of learning the Scriptures to help us grow in our relationship with God through Christ Jesus.
Scripture is not simply a good story book to read and teach our children and grandchildren; there are life lessons unto salvation in Christ Jesus and for what is expected of us as God’s chosen children. The Bible is the most important textbook we will ever read as it gives us the instructions to life that is everlasting in the glory of God. Paul declares in Colossians 1:27-29, “To them God willed to make known what are the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles: which is Christ in you, the hope of glory. Him we preach, warning every man and teaching every man in all wisdom, that we may present every man perfect in Christ Jesus. To this end I also labor, striving according to His working which works in me mightily.”
Dear LORD,
Please let the passion to share the message of the Gospel, as You put in the heart of the Apostle Paul, be vibrant in all our lives that we all “may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work” (2 Timothy 3:17). In Jesus name I pray, amen.
