2 Timothy 3:1–9

The Apostle Paul has been teaching Timothy about the ways one should lead their life as a follower of Jesus Christ and being a good worker for Him. In 2 Timothy 3:1–9 Paul lists numerous ways in which people will conduct themselves before the return of our Savior Jesus. He instructs Timothy to turn away from such people and describes them in 2 Timothy 3:7 (NKJV) as, “7always learning and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth.” In the end, all will be made known and the trickery of such people will be ended.

This is a promise and example of the conduct of people before the end times.

The truth – the real truth – is only found in Christ Jesus. Jesus declares in John 14:6, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.” The Apostle Paul instructs us in fleeing from sin and repenting unto salvation in Romans 10:9–10 declaring, “that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.”

The ways of this world – the sinful nature, as Paul describes in 2 Timothy 3:1-9 is prevalent in the world today. We are not to fall to it but to flee from it. To believe unto righteousness is to receive the same gift that God gave to Abram/Abraham in Genesis 15:6 stating, “And he believed in the LORD, and He accounted it to him for righteousness.” The Apostle Paul affirms this for everyone who will believe in the LORD as he declares in Romans 4:13–15, “For the promise that he would be the heir of the world was not to Abraham or to his seed through the law, but through the righteousness of faith. For if those who are of the law are heirs, faith is made void and the promise made of no effect, because the law brings about wrath; for where there is no law there is no transgression.”

Dear LORD,

The evil ways of this world are all around us each day. Please help us to turn from them – to repent from the ways of this world – and run to You and Your true righteousness that is found only in our Savior Christ Jesus. In Jesus name I pray, amen.
