2 Timothy 2:14–19

In 2 Timothy 2:14 (NKJV) the Apostle Paul instructs Timothy to “Remind them of these things,” and it is important that we understand who the “them” is. In 2 Timothy 2:2 Paul states, “And the things that you have heard from me among many witnesses, commit these to faithful men who will be able to teach others also.” And in 2 Timothy 2:10 Paul states, “Therefore I endure all things for the sake of the elect, that they also may obtain the salvation which is in Christ Jesus with eternal glory.” Paul is referring to those who are the elect or chosen by God. This is everyone who has answered the call of the Lord on their lives – this is referring to all Christians. Jesus declared in John 6:44, “No one can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me draws him; and I will raise him up at the last day.”

Paul instructs Timothy in 2 Timothy 2:15–18 to teach those called by God to, “15Be diligent to present yourself approved to God, a worker who does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. 16But shun profane and idle babblings, for they will increase to more ungodliness. 17And their message will spread like cancer. Hymenaeus and Philetus are of this sort, 18who have strayed concerning the truth, saying that the resurrection is already past; and they overthrow the faith of some.”

This is a command to “15Be diligent to present yourself approved to God, a worker who does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth (2 Timothy 2:15).

As we rightly divide the world of truth/the Bible, we are learning the things and ways in which God desires us to be and live as His chosen people called to everlasting life by Him. As we learn more and more about the teachings of the Bible we are able to discern more and more of the false teachings that are around us in the world today, and by doing so we can help others draw closer to the Lord as well.

Dear LORD,

We are humbled to realize and understand that we are first chosen by You to be Your children. Please help us to live the lives that You desire us to live – in Christ, and help us to discern between the false teachings of this world and the truth that is found only in Your word. In Jesus name I pray, amen.
