2 Timothy 2:11–13 (part 1, verse 11)
2 Timothy 2:11 (NKJV) declares,
“11This is a faithful saying:
For if we died with Him,
We shall also live with Him.
The Apostle Paul states in Romans 6:3–4, “Or do you not know that as many of us as were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death? Therefore we were buried with Him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.” Paul continues in Romans 6:8–11, “Now if we died with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with Him, knowing that Christ, having been raised from the dead, dies no more. Death no longer has dominion over Him. For the death that He died, He died to sin once for all; but the life that He lives, He lives to God. Likewise you also, reckon yourselves to be dead indeed to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
This is a promise of being redeemed from living in the sinful nature of the old self to living in the newness of life in the righteousness of Christ Jesus.
When we open our hearts to Jesus and profess Him our Lord and Savior, we are acknowledging that He died for our sins on the cross and that through His resurrection He overcame the chains of sin that bind us all, setting us free from sin forever more. We are beginning to understand and realize that we can be forgiven through God’s grace to us in Christ Jesus, and that we can begin living a new life as a Christian. Paul states in 2 Corinthians 5:17, “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.” Paul teaches us in Colossians 3:1–4, “If then you were raised with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ is, sitting at the right hand of God. Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth. For you died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ who is our life appears, then you also will appear with Him in glory.” Christ Jesus is our life; without Him we can do nothing that is pleasing to God (John 15:5). Open your heart to Christ Jesus today and invite Him to fill you with a newness of life through His Holy Spirit who He promised to guide you forever (John 14:15-18, 26) beginning here on earth, and then forever in His glory in heaven.
Dear LORD,
We believe that You died for us and that we died with You through baptism as we went under the water and rose up into a new life as we publicly professed our salvation in Christ Jesus. We put on a newness of life, leaving our old lives behind as we now seek Your will for our lives through the guidance of Your Holy Spirit living within us. Please give us strength to live as You desire us to live and guide us each step of the way – In Christ! In Jesus name I pray, amen.
