2 Timothy 1:3-5

The Apostle Paul begins the body of his second letter to Timothy by thanking God for the genuine faith that he sees in Timothy and its reflection of the faith of Timothy’s mother and grandmother (2 Timothy 1:3–5).

This is an example of teaching our children and grandchildren to put God first in their lives as it produces genuine faith through our example.

The Apostle Paul is sent back through the relationship of Timothy and his mother and grandmother to his own guidance and pure conscience as directed by his forefathers (2 Timothy 1:3). I’m sure that many of you, as am I, are thinking of the guidance we have received in Christ Jesus from our parents and grandparents.

The LORD spoke through Moses in Deuteronomy 6:4–9 (NKJV), “Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one! You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength.

“And these words which I command you today shall be in your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, when you walk by the way, when you lie down, and when you rise up. You shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.” We too should follow this advice when teaching our children and grandchildren.

Dear LORD,

You teach us through Your Word of how important it is to continue leading our children and grandchildren in genuine faith, as an example to them, so that they too can be an example of having genuine faith in You to others as they grow and mature. Many of us are reminded today of our own parents and grandparents and their leading us by their faith. Please help us to be the people You desire us to be as we now are the examples – In Christ. In Jesus name I pray, amen.
