2 Peter 1:10-11

Peter begins this passage with the word “Therefore” which indicates that we should look back to the lessons that we have learned just previous to this one; that we should add with all diligence to our faith in our salvation in Christ Jesus virtue, knowledge of Christ Jesus, self-control, perseverance, godliness, brotherly kindness, and love.  If we take hold of these things in Christ Jesus, then we will be fruitful in the knowledge of Christ Jesus, which indicates that His qualities will be visible in our lives.  “Therefore” (2 Peter 1:10) bringing us to today’s lesson, Peter says to be “even more diligent to make your call and election sure” as this will keep us from stumbling in our walk with the Lord and He will open the door to us into His “everlasting kingdom” (2 Peter 1:11).

This is a command for a Christian to be continuously diligent in their walk with Jesus.

This is a promise of entrance into the kingdom of heaven for one who seeks these qualities of Jesus with continued diligence in making their “call and election sure” (2 Peter 1:10).

We all want to go to heaven right?  And we all believe deep down that we will right?  But I have to ask you…are you striving to grasp and hold on to the qualities that Peter speaks of in 2 Peter 1:5-7?  Are you seeking God’s will for your life in showing you the way, the truth, and the life that is only found in Christ Jesus?  And are you working diligently to ensure the calling God has for you and an everlasting open door to you to enter into heaven?  Jesus told His disciples in John 14:4, “And where I go you know, and the way you know.”  And when they questioned Him concerning these things He replied in John 14:6, “I am the way, the truth, and the life.  No one comes to the Father except through Me.”

Dear LORD,

We all want to believe deep down that because You are love (1 John 4:8, 16) You would not let anyone spend eternity in hell, and we know that it is Your desire that no one would.  That’s why You sent Your one and only Son, Jesus, into this world – to save us all from the wages of sin which is death (Romans 6:23).  But You, in being love, cannot and will not force us to believe in You and Your Son, our Savior, Jesus.  But by our faith in You as our eternal Father, and in Jesus as our Savior, You will save us and reserve for us an open door to eternity in heaven…if we believe.  Please let it be so LORD.  In Jesus name I pray, amen.
