2 Corinthians 4:7

There are a couple of things that we need to grasp from 2 Corinthians 4:7 as the Apostle Paul states, “But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellence of the power may be of God and not of us.”  The first is that the letters written to the churches were stored in clay jars.  These “earthen vessels” were made of clay and were by no means fancy.  They were normal, ordinary clay jars.  These clay jars were by no means in any way comparable to the glory that was held within God’s Holy Spirit inspired documents which they stored.  The second is that the earthen vessels – our physical bodies, are still yet earthen vessels that are only temporary and in no way comparable to the new spiritual bodies we will receive in heaven.  This is to show/remind us that as we are in Christ, we are still yet in the earthly world that is not comparable to the much more glorious spiritual world that is to come.  The Bible teaches us in Philippians 3:20-21 (NIV), “but our citizenship is in heaven.  And we eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ, who by the power that enables him to bring everything under his control, will transform our lowly bodies so that they will be like his glorious body.”  In this world and in our weaknesses, we must rely on the power of God working through His Holy Spirit in our lives to guide us through this earthly world and into the more glorious spiritual world.

This is a promise that while we are still yet in the earthen physical state, we will one day, in Christ, receive new more glorious bodies.

This is a reminder that our strength comes from God and not from ourselves.

God gives us signs, simple, little signs all around us to show us of our need for Him and of our reliance on Him to successfully get through this earthly world and into the much more glorious spiritual world of eternity in heaven basking in His glory.  The Bible teaches us in Colossians 3:4 (NKJV), “When Christ who is our life appears, then you also will appear with Him in glory.”  But He also gives us the freedom to choose whether we want to take notice of these signs or if we want to ignore them – the choice is up to us, but God will always continue to show us of His wondrous glory and path that He has for all of us – in Christ.  Choose Jesus today and He will help you through this earthen vessel and into an eternal spiritual vessel of true life.

Dear LORD,

You made us in Your image, and we strive to be all that we can be – we strive to adapt and overcome through the trials and tribulations of this world.  But it is through You that we get the strength to do it; it is through the power of Your Holy Spirit working and indwelling within our earthly vessels through salvation in Your One and only Son Christ Jesus that leads us to the day when we will receive a much more glorious spiritual body for eternity in Your glory.  Please let it be so Lord.  In Jesus name I pray, amen.
