1 Timothy 6:11 (part 6: gentleness)
The sixth thing that the Apostle Paul instructs Timothy to pursue in 1 Timothy 6:11is gentleness. One of the main things that we should do as Christians is to follow in the footsteps and teaching of Jesus. In Matthew 11:28–30 (NKJV) Jesus declares, “Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.” The Apostle Paul instructs the church at Philippi in Philippians 4:5, “Let your gentleness be known to all men. The Lord is at hand.”
This is a command to pursue gentleness.
To pursue gentleness is to pursue an attitude of caring for others. There is too much self-centeredness in the world today in which people put themselves before others and is reflective of the ways of this world/ways of the devil. Jesus said in John 13:34-35 (NKJV), “A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another. By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.” To have love for one another is to have a caring heart for the needs of others and to be gentle to them in our actions and attitudes.
Dear LORD,
Jesus is always caring and gentle for the needs of others. As we strive to follow in the footsteps of Jesus, please help us to be aware of our actions and attitudes toward others, that we would be a reflection of Jesus in a struggling world; that we would spread the hope, joy, and love that You have first shown to us, to others. In Jesus name I pray, amen.
