1 Timothy 6:11 (part 2: godliness)

The second thing that the Apostle Paul instructs Timothy to pursue in 1 Timothy 6:11 is godliness. Paul declares in 1 Timothy 3:16 (NKJV), “And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness:

God was manifested in the flesh,

Justified in the Spirit,

Seen by angels,

Preached among the Gentiles,

Believed on in the world,

Received up in glory.”

This is the pathway of Jesus into this world, his mission in this world, and His ascension to heaven.

As the Apostle Paul instructs Timothy to seek godliness, he is instructing Timothy to seek Jesus as Jesus is godliness that came from heaven to save us from sin. The Apostle John proclaims in John 1:1-4, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made. In Him was life, and the life was the light of men.” And in John 1:14 the Bible teaches, “And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.” Jesus is godliness; and we should pursue all that He has for us.

Dear LORD,

We put on godliness as we receive the promise of Your Holy Spirit to dwell within us as Jesus promised for all who believe in Him (John 14:15–18, 26). Please let it be so LORD. In Jesus name I pray, amen.
