1 Timothy 5:3–8
The Bible teaches us in James 1:26–27 (NKJV), “If anyone among you thinks he is religious, and does not bridle his tongue but deceives his own heart, this one’s religion is useless. Pure and undefiled religion before God and the Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their trouble, and to keep oneself unspotted from the world.” This statement by the leader of the Church in Jerusalem and the half-brother of Jesus should convict us all as it is a definition of “Pure and undefiled religion before God and the Father” (James 1:27). In the definition of what we strive for is the realization and understanding that none of us live up to this standard. The fact that James mentions “to visit orphans and widows in their trouble” (James 1:27) shows how important it is for us to look after those in need as we seek to follow Christ Jesus and grow in our relationship with Him.
This is a command to care for the needs of widows.
As we learn to love one another as Jesus first has shown His love for us (John 13:34-35), we are to care for those in need, just as the Bible teaches us in Luke 10:25–37 of the Good Samaritan. The Apostle Paul even draws our responsibility closer to home as he instructs in 1 Timothy 5:8, “8But if anyone does not provide for his own, and especially for those of his household, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.”
Dear LORD,
You have created us to be Your children, and You take care of our every need as Your children. The salvation You have provided for us is based around being a part of Your family, and in reflection of this You have commanded that we take care of one another which emphasizes care for our earthly family. Please fill us with compassion and love through Your Holy Spirit dwelling within us to follow as You lead. In Jesus name I pray, amen.
