1 Timothy 5:11–16

In 1 Timothy 5:11–16 (NKJV) the Apostle Paul addresses the younger women who have been widowed. He states, “11But refuse the younger widows; for when they have begun to grow wanton against Christ, they desire to marry, 12having condemnation because they have cast off their first faith. 13And besides they learn to be idle, wandering about from house to house, and not only idle but also gossips and busybodies, saying things which they ought not. 14Therefore I desire that the younger widows marry, bear children, manage the house, give no opportunity to the adversary to speak reproachfully. 15For some have already turned aside after Satan. 16If any believing man or woman has widows, let them relieve them, and do not let the church be burdened, that it may relieve those who are really widows.”

This is an example for the younger widow to follow – in Christ.

The older widow [over sixty years old (1 Timothy 5:9)] is past childbearing and has grown in wisdom that can be useful for teaching the younger women in the church. The younger widow may still yet pursue a family and bear children with a new husband. The Apostle Paul indicates that this is good for the younger widow as it will give her a new purpose in life and keep her from falling to the ways of this world and the temptations of Satan.

Dear LORD,

We pray today for the younger widow; that You would fill their hearts, minds, and souls with guidance from Your Holy Spirit to lead them in the path that You have for them in their loss, that it would be turned into gain, and that through the work You are doing in their lives would be gain for the kingdom of heaven and bring glory to You – in Christ. In Jesus name I pray, amen.
