1 Timothy 2:9–10

In 1 Timothy 2:9-10 the Apostle Paul gives instructions for the women of the church concerning their appearance in public. This may be a little over the top for the perception of the appearance of women today, but it was directed at the false teachers and false religious beliefs of prostitution as a way to make money for the false religious beliefs. Paul addressed this situation in 1 Corinthians 6:15–20 for the decency of the church. This was also a condition of the secular religious beliefs throughout the Old Testament.

This is a command that a Christian woman should present herself appropriately in not just the church, but in her every day walk with the LORD.

There is a modest beauty in a woman that far exceeds anything that extensive make-up or jewelry could ever surpass. I do not believe that this instruction from the Apostle Paul in 1 Timothy 2:9-10 is to prevent a Christian woman from presenting herself in the beauty that God has given her, just not to over-do it with elaborate efforts as it is simply not necessary to see the beauty that lies within one’s heart. In a simple comparison are the words of the LORD to the Prophet Samuel as he was seeking a new king for Israel as per the LORD’s standards. In 1 Samuel 16:7 the LORD states to Samuel, “Do not look at his appearance or at his physical stature, because I have refused him. For the LORD does not see as man sees; for man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart.”

Dear LORD,

Please help us to understand that our outward appearance has nothing to do with having a godly heart in seeking Your will for our lives. The beauty You have given us is Your individual unique creation that presents each person like no other and that everyone is most beautiful in Your eyes. Please help us to learn through this lesson that it is the condition of our hearts that You desire to change and purify – in Christ. In Jesus name I pray, amen.
