1 Timothy 2:8

In 1 Timothy 2:8 the Apostle Paul declares, “8I desire therefore that the men pray everywhere, lifting up holy hands, without wrath and doubting;”. Paul has given instructions for prayer throughout 1 Timothy 2 and continues this by instructing that it is okay to pray everywhere. To lift up one’s hands is to open oneself to the LORD “without wrath and doubting” (1 Timothy 2:8, NKJV). This is to do so in obedience to God while having confidence in His holy power to hear and help one in time of need, and to receive our thanksgiving and prayers for not just ourselves, but also for the needs of others.

This is sincere prayer with an open heart seeking God’s will for our lives.

The Bible teaches us in James 5:16, “confess your trespasses to one another, and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much.” It is our confidence – our faith in God to hear our prayers and act on them that makes the connection in an active prayer life. We must also realize and understand that simply because we pray with fervent hearts does not mean that God will answer our prayers as we desire because it is His will for our lives that we need to be seeking, not our own will.

Jesus declares in Matthew 6:33, “But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.” We must put God first in our lives and allow Him to guide us where and how He desires.

Dear LORD,

You are mighty and You are powerful. We know that You can answer all our prayers to the fullest. We do not know Your will for our lives as we are prone to seek our own agendas. Please help us to be patient and wait upon Your will for us, and when given, that we would act upon it and follow the path that You desire for our lives. In Jesus name I pray, amen.
