1 Thessalonians 5:1-2

In 1 Thessalonians 5:1-2 the Apostle Paul speaks of the “day of the Lord” (1 Thessalonians 5:2 (NKJV) and is referring to the day in which Jesus will return as he explained in 1 Thessalonians 4:15-18. He goes on to explain that the Lord will come “as a thief in the night” (1 Thessalonians 5:2b).

Jesus taught in Matthew 24:36, “But of that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, but My Father only.” Jesus also teaches in Matthew 24:42-44, “Watch therefore, for you do not know what hour your Lord is coming. But know this, that if the master of the house had known what hour the thief would come, he would have watched and not allowed his house to be broken into. Therefore you also be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect.”

This is a promise of the Lord’s return.

This is a command to be ready for that day.

The return of the Lord is a big topic in society today, and especially among the Christian population, but the truth is that we simply do not know, nor can we figure it all out as to when that day will be. We must not be side-tracked by trying to figure it all out as the Bible teaches us that we cannot. But the Bible also teaches us that we can learn enough to lead us to salvation in Christ Jesus. The Apostle John wrote in John 20:30-31by the guidance of God’s Holy Spirit, “And truly Jesus did many other signs in the presence of His disciples, which are not written in this book; but these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in His name.”

Dear LORD,

There is much worry and concern about when You will return. Please help us to realize and understand that whenever that day is, it is the condition of our hearts that is important unto salvation and eternal life. No one will shout in excitement, “I knew it would be today!” as no one knows the day nor the hour, nor will anyone ever figure it out. Please help us to get ready our hearts in Christ Jesus so that we will be ready in confidence when that day comes. In Jesus name I pray, amen.
