1 Corinthians 3:1-4

As the Apostle Paul is desiring to lead the people of the church at Corinth, he reveals to them in 1 Corinthians 3:1 (NKJV), “1And I, brethren, could not speak to you as to spiritual people but as to carnal, as to babes in Christ.”  The people of the church at Corinth are yet young in Christ and are in need of the “milk” of the gospel before they can properly digest the “solid food” (1 Corinthians 3:2).  Paul gives them examples of their continuance to hang on to the sinful nature, proving their infancy in their walk with Christ, as they continue to have, “envy, strife, and divisions among you, are you not carnal and behaving like mere men?  4For when one says, “I am of Paul,” and another, “I am of Apollos, are you not carnal?” (1 Corinthians 3:3b-4).

This is an example that as one professes Jesus to be their Lord and Savior, the changes in one’s life (growth) is a continuing process through a continued “faith in” and “dedication to” follow Christ Jesus.

Just as with learning and growing in the ways of life (physically), one has to learn and grow in the ways of life (spiritually).  The people of the church at Corinth were yet young in their walk with Jesus and were continuing to hold on to the ways of the sinful nature.  This is not uncommon still yet today and is part of the process of growing in your relationship with Jesus.  We take steps, just as a baby learns to walk step by step, so too we learn to take steps in our new relationship with Jesus as He reveals to us the guidance and learning curves through His Holy Spirit working in our spiritual lives as He wills.  The important part is that when God leads us to take a new step, that we follow where and how He leads.

Dear LORD,

I believe that we should always consider ourselves open to new growth in our walk with Jesus as You lead us through the guidance of Your Holy Spirit.  We are but babes in Christ and in need of milk before we are able to walk and digest the sold food that You give us.  Please help us to always remember that we were all once spiritual babes and that we are always in need of Your guidance through Your Holy Spirit as we grow and mature in our walk with Jesus.  Please help us to put aside envy, strife, and divisions, and lead our hearts to come together – in Christ.  In Jesus name I pray, amen.
