1 Corinthians 13:8-10

We have learned that “Love never fails” (1 Corinthians 13:8a, NKJV), but today we will look at all of verse 8 and include verses 9 and 10 with it.

The importance of knowing that love never fails and the connection of true love to God is worthy of an independent study, but as the Apostle Paul teaches in 1 Corinthians 13:8-10 as love never fails, it is the means by which we receive the gifts which will pass away while love will remain forever; love is God/God is love (1 John 4:8;16).

This is a promise that love will remain as other things pass away.

Paul has been working toward bringing the congregation of the church at Corinth together as a single unit in Christ Jesus.  He began the letter by noting that he had been informed that there was “division” among them (1 Corinthians 1:10).  He has spoken to them about the different gifts that they may receive, but that all are given by God and should work together for the glory of God.  He states in 1 Corinthians 12:12-14, “For as the body is one and has many members, but all the members of that one body, being many, are one body, so also is Christ.  For by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body – whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or free – and have all been made to drink into one Spirit.  For in fact the body is not one member but many.”  And in 1 Corinthians 13, Paul teaches that in all the gifts given by God, none of them are of any worth without love binding them all together.  All things will pass away, but love will remain.

Dear LORD,

Please help us to realize and understand that without love, our intentions have ulterior motives that are hidden from the truth.  Please help us to realize that love is sincere and obedient to the gift/gifts that You give us.  Love never fails, as You have taught us in 1 Corinthians 13:8a, but help us to realize and understand that the gift/gifts that You give us must be centered around the love of Christ Jesus living within us through Your Holy Spirit given to all who will believe in You.  Please let it be so LORD in the lives of all who hear/read these words.  In Jesus name I pray, amen.
