1 Corinthians 13:4-7 (7b)

In 1 Corinthians 13:7b (NKJV) we learn that “love believes all things,”.  The (NIV) states this as “always trusts,”.  This is not believed to be a sense of gullibility, but that God will always be with us through the thick and thin of life.  Love always believes/trusts in something; Love has to have a point of focus.  The focus of love in this is that God will see us through whatever this world will throw at us.  Love “believes” that God will help us through the trials and tribulations of this world.  The best supporting verse for this, I believe, is 1 Corinthians 13:8a (NKJV) stating, “Love never fails.”

This is a promise that love is always believing in God.

Many people have a difficult time believing in God during hard times – when the trials and tribulations of life attack.  But this is when we build our trust in God – to continue believing in Him when things don’t go our way.  Jesus states in John 16:33, “these things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace.  In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.”  The Apostle Paul tells us in 2 Corinthians 7:4, “Great is my boldness of speech toward you, great is my boasting on your behalf.  I am filled with comfort.  I am exceedingly joyful in all our tribulation.”  We may wonder why/how Paul could say such a thing, but the answer is found in the words of Jesus in John 14:15-18, “If you love Me, keep My commandments.  And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever – the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you.  I will not leave you orphans; I will come to you.”  And in John 14:27 Jesus declares, “Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you.  Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.”

Dear LORD,

We are frail and prone to worry, fret, and run when the trials of life attack.  Please fill us with Your Holy Spirit as Jesus has promised in John 14:15-18, 27 and give us the confidence to know that You are with us always through whatever this world may throw at us.  Please help us to believe, LORD – to believe in You.  In Jesus name I pray, amen.
