1 Corinthians 11:3

In 1 Corinthians 11:3 we find a Bible verse that the sinful nature attacks with a vengeance but taken in the proper context as God intends it to be is the answer to all domestic violence.  1 Corinthians 11:3 (NKJV) states, “But I want you to know that the head of every man is Christ, the head of woman is man, and the head of Christ is God.”  The (NIV) states it as, “But I want you to realize that the head of every man is Christ, and the head of the woman is man, and the head of Christ is God.”  The (HCSB) states it as, “But I want you to know that Christ is the head of every man, and the man is the head of the woman, and God is the head of Christ.”  The (KJV) states it as, “But I would have you know, that the head of every man is Christ; and the head of the woman is the man; and the head of Christ is God.”  And the (ESV) lists this Bible verse as, “But I want you to understand that the head of every man is Christ, the head of a wife is her husband, and the head of Christ is God.”

This Bible verse, taken in the proper context is the answer to all domestic violence.  This Bible verse does not say that man is the boss of the woman.  This Bible verse does not say that a woman is to be treated with bad or harmful intentions and the woman has to allow it.  This Bible verse is given in the love of God through our Savior Jesus Christ.  LOVE is the intention.  The man is to care for his wife with all good intentions of looking after her every care and need with the love that Christ Jesus showed in saving him from sin and an eternity in hell wishing that he would have repented and paid more attention to the commands of Jesus when he had a chance.  This Bible verse does not say that the woman is to have a rebellious attitude against a man being the head of her life – in Christ.  The Bible teaches us in Ephesians 5:22-33 (NKJV), “Wives, submit to your own husbands, as to the Lord.  For the husband is head of the wife, as also Christ is head of the church; and He is the Savior of the body.  Therefore, just as the church is subject to Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in everything.

“Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself for her, that He might sanctify and cleanse her with the washing of water by the word, that He might present her to Himself a glorious church, not having spot or wrinkle or any such thing, but that she should be holy and without blemish.  So husbands ought to love their own wives as their own bodies; he who loves his wife loves himself.  For no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as the Lord does the church.  For we are members of His body, of His flesh and of His bones.  ‘For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh’ [Genesis 2:24].  This is a great mystery, but I speak concerning Christ and the church.  Nevertheless let each one of you in particular so love his own wife as himself, and let the wife see that she respects her husband.”

This is a promise that true love is the answer – in Christ.

1 John 4:16 (NIV) declares, “And so we know and rely on the love God has for us.

“God is love.  Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in them.”  Do you rely on the love God has for you?

The problem is that we don’t rely on God’s love to be the head of our lives.  We are too concerned about ruling our wives and telling her what to do because we (as men) are the head.  With this attitude it is no wonder that the women have so much trouble submitting their lives to us and refusing to let us be the head of their lives.  Wake-up call…we are not the head – God is, then Christ, then in the love of God through our salvation in Christ Jesus is the love that a man is to lead his wife with…LOVE, caring and nurturing, giving one’s life for her because you love her so much that God gave His love in you for her.  It’s not about us or me or I but about Him, the head of our lives, the cure for all domestic violence.

Dear LORD,

We are so stubborn and selfish.  We are so self-centered that we cannot see Your love to guide us in marriage; to be the guiding light of our lives.  We want Your will for our lives, but we must learn to follow in Your will for it to take effect.  Please help us as men in Christ Jesus to act like it in presenting ourselves to our wives in the love of Christ Jesus as He gave Himself for us that we too would give ourselves for our wives.  And please help Your love to reign in the lives of our wives so that they would have confidence and trust in us as their husbands led by You as You LORD are the true head of all.  Please let it be so LORD.  In Jesus name I pray, amen.
