1 Corinthians 11:23-26

In 1 Corinthians 11:23-26 the Apostle Paul explains to the congregation of the church at Corinth the sacred act of the Lord’s Supper as he states, “For I received from the Lord that which I also delivered to you: that the Lord Jesus on the same night in which He was betrayed took bread; and when He had given thanks, He broke it and said, “Take, eat; this is My body which is broken for you; do this in remembrance of Me.”  In the same manner He also took the cup after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in My blood.  This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.”

For as often as you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death till He comes.

This is a command to partake of the Lord’s Supper in remembrance of Jesus and the sacrifice that He made for us to save us from sin.

We find the events of the Lord’s Supper in Matthew 26:26-30; Mark 14:22-26; Luke 22:14-22; John 13.  In Mark 14:22 (NKJV) Jesus declares, “And as they were eating, Jesus took bread, blessed and broke it, and gave it to them and said, “Take, eat; this is My body.”

Matthew 26:27-28 states, “Then He took the cup, and gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you.  For this is My blood of the new covenant, which is shed for many for the remission of sins.”  In Luke’s recording of this event, Jesus states in Luke 22:15, “With fervent desire I have desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer; for I say to you, I will no longer eat of it until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God.”  And in John 13:31-35 Jesus declares, “Now the Son of Man is glorified, and God is glorified in Him.  If God is glorified in Him, God will also glorify Him in Himself, and glorify Him immediately.  Little children, I shall be with you a little while longer.  You will seek Me; and as I said to the Jews, ‘Where I am going, you cannot come,’ so now I say to you.  A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another.  By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.”  Jesus made the statement in John 13:33, “Where I am going, you cannot come.”  Jesus stated this because we cannot save ourselves – we cannot, nor do we have the power to do what He did on the cross for us.  We celebrate the Lord’s Supper in remembrance of Him – our Savior – Jesus.

Dear LORD,

Thank You for sending Your One and only Son Jesus to save us from sin.  Please help us to celebrate this as we celebrate the Lord’s Supper.  Thank You Jesus!  In Jesus name I pray, amen.
