1 Corinthians 11:17-22

In 1 Corinthians 11:17-22 the Apostle Paul begins his instructions for the Lord’s Supper and the partaking of it.  He has been informed that the congregation has not been upholding the importance of the Lord’s Supper as they have turned it into a social gathering.  He states in 1 Corinthians 11:21-22 (NKJV), “For in eating, each one takes his own supper ahead of others; and one is hungry and another is drunk.  What!  Do you not have houses to eat and drink in?  Or do you despise the church of God and shame those who have nothing?  What shall I say to you?  Shall I praise you in this?  I do not praise you.”  He accuses them of having divisions among them (1 Corinthians 11:18) and using the church for the daily activities of home life which lowers the standard of worship and holiness that should be in the church.

This is an example of how the sacred act of the Lord’s Supper can become a routine instead of a sacred act of worship and remembrance of how Jesus died for us and saved us from sin.

In this hustle and bustle world it can become easy to make our act of worship a routine.  We “schedule” church and attend when we have nothing conflicting that would keep us from doing so.  We attend church with a rejoicing attitude of, “we made it here this week” instead of, “we are here every week to worship God and learn about Him, us, and the relationship that He desires us to have with Him in Christ Jesus our Savior.”  We are important enough to God that He sent His One and only Son to die in our place so He could save us from eternal damnation; He should be that important to us as well.  Take a moment today and thank God for what He has done in your life – in Christ.

Dear LORD,

Satan does his best to keep us caught in this hustle and bustle world so that we have no time left for You – that’s his goal – to keep us so busy that we forget to make You the most important part of our lives.  Please help us to realize and understand this so that we can make our plans and actions to be aware of the devil’s pressures on our lives and overcome them through putting our trust in our Savior Christ Jesus.  In Jesus name I pray, amen.
