1 Corinthians 10:25-11:1

In 1 Corinthians 10:25-11:1 the Apostle Paul is addressing things which may seem on the one hand to be incorrect behavior, yet on the other hand, innocence in behavior.  The question arose of eating meat that had been sacrificed to idols – was it lawful or not in the eyes of God?  Paul states in 1 Corinthians 10:27-28 (NKJV), “If any of those who do not believe invites you to dinner, and you desire to go, eat whatever is set before you, asking no question for conscience’ sake.  But if anyone says to you, “This was offered to idols,” do not eat it for the sake of the one who told you, and for conscience’ sake; for “the earth is the LORD’S, and all its fullness” [Psalm 24:1].

This is a command to imitate Christ Jesus in all we say and do.

There will be times when things we have done in innocence may be questioned as incorrect or improper behavior.  The Apostle Paul teaches us that we are to be courteous to others with good intentions; if we are given information that what is about to happen is against the will of God, then we should stand up for Christianity, but do so in a polite and courteous way as to uphold the good nature of Christ Jesus in our lives.  But, if, in the same situation we are not given any information, even under speculation, that there is anything happening that is against the will of God in our lives, then we should respect the hospitality of others and have no reservations about our actions.  The best course of action in all situations is to imitate Christ Jesus as the Apostle Paul teaches us in 1 Corinthians 11:1.

Dear LORD,

If we are invited by others to dinner or an event, please help us see that it is an opportunity to share the Christian life and attitude with others so that we may seize the opportunity to lead them to Christ Jesus.  If the situation is that which would not be approved by Jesus, then help us to realize and understand that if Jesus were standing here with us physically, would we still continue in this action or event?  Please help us decide LORD, as our goal is to lead a life that is pleasing to You – in Christ.  In Jesus name I pray, amen.
